Weaving Nature

August 4th - 29th, 2016

Artist and collaborator Camillo Villa and I worked with a textile group formed in the 70s, based in Colombia called ”Grupo Artesanal Chaleche”. A group of women artisans who produce woven garments and accessories made with locally sourced materials. The project created space for addressing environmental and sustainability concerns in the village of Guatavita, Colombia. We spent time learning about the group’s history, their weaving practices and day to day living. We worked in their community garden, learning about the food they grow and their food accessibility needs. We built composting bins for food waste disposal and created a natural dye workshop, to consider alternatives to chemical dyes for their weaving material. The workshop used locally foraged and grown materials, and as a closing to the project we created a book with all the dye recipes and distributed them to the community.
